For the last four years, I’ve worked to bring you in-depth reporting on Richmond’s recovery housing industry — an area that has received little sustained coverage from other media.
This project began as something I built and maintained without funding because I believed the industry deserved closer scrutiny. There were important questions to explore about how recovery housing operates, how residents are treated and how the programs serving them are funded and overseen.
There is still so much more to report. And while there can be long stretches between major stories, the work continues behind the scenes — reviewing court records, interviewing sources, building databases, conducting research and following leads that can take months to fully develop.
My commitment to covering this industry hasn’t changed. But after four years of doing this work on a volunteer basis, I need to make the project more sustainable so I can continue dedicating the time and resources it requires.
That’s why I registered Investigate RVA as an LLC, and I’m now opening the door to reader support. The reporting will remain free and open to everyone, but readers who want to help sustain the work will now have a way to contribute financially.
If you would like to help, please consider becoming a monthly supporter.

Christa,
Hi there! Faithful reader and mother of a child who died by overdose.
I don’t want to commit monthly but I’d make a one time donation if it was an option.
Thanks,
Tricia
Hi Tricia,
Thank you for following my reporting and for reaching out. I’m so sorry for your loss.
The monthly contribution option can actually be used as a one-time contribution if that’s what works best for you. You can choose the amount and then cancel the subscription at any time, including after the first payment, so there’s no obligation to continue monthly.
I really appreciate your interest in supporting the work.
